What does it mean to eat seasonally?
Eating seasonally means eating what is fresh, local, and yes - in season. Seasonal eating is both healthy and economical because the food sold and consumed closer to the source. What is in season right now, you ask? A plethora of colorful, fresh fruits and vegetables are available now at your local farmer’s market.
Seasonal springtime vegetables include:
- leeks
- asparagus
- brussel sprouts
These are all great choices for a healthy source of dietary fiber, vitamin B6, iron and magnesium, and a very good source of folate as well as vitamins A, C, and K.
For fruits, strawberries improve the immune system, lower blood pressure, protect against cancer, and help regulate blood pressure. Blackberries are high in manganese, boost brain health, and are good for teeth and gums.
In short, when you eat seasonally, you are making a commitment to your health. Seasonal fruits and vegetables provide a host of health benefits for your mind and body. All of that and eating seasonally is better for local farmers and the environment. Eat the rainbow! It’s currently in season.
